The Hotel-class nuclear-powered submarine was a ballistic missile submarine operated by the Soviet Navy, and it was the first type to be equipped with a nuclear propulsion system. There are subtypes 1 to 3, and eight units of the Hotel-class were commissioned between 1960 and 1962. The Hotel 1 type, developed as a successor to the Golf-class conventional submarines, had the drawback of being able to launch ballistic missiles only when surfaced. Therefore, all ships of this class underwent a modification in the 1960s to the Hotel 2 type (Project 658M), which was equipped with the R-21 submarine-launched ballistic missile capable of being launched while submerged.
